THE FOLLOWING STANDARDS ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL CERTIFICATIONS:

The vast majority of law enforcement officers and K9 handlers in particular are in reasonable if not good physical shape. In addition, most law enforcement agencies have physical fitness standards that must be met annually or sometimes even quarterly. However, there are those officers and handlers who do not keep themselves moderately fit (we all see them) as well as some agencies which do not require a fitness standard.
These are the reasons ASCT PFT requirements have been established.
Statistics are overwhelming in the fact that those who cannot meet standards cannot and do not perform well with their K9. Why? Typically, it is because of lack of endurance and that leads directly to fatigue which ends up with failure or neglecting training.
ASCT is the absolute first national K9 organization to establish PFT requirements.  We set them to assure the best results on the street, healthy handlers equals quality endurance for training and performance.

The following standards are not designed to be elite or gallant.  They are very realistic, achievable standards.  ASCT will begin testing these standards August 31, 2010. All members should assure that he or she can meet these standards by testing date.  After the initial testing, recurrent testing will occur each year during certification qualification testing or during advanced classes.

All ASCT certifications will require this testing.
Certified persons who are under medical limitations will not be required to test during which time they are under physical restrictions. However, restrictions on physical performance are medical statements of (unfit for duty) which means the K9 function is also restricted. Therefore, if the physical restriction is not medically released (or the certified member) is unable to test during a period of 1 year - the organization will deem the officer as unfit for K9 duty and a certification will not be issued.

IMPORTANT! If a certified member has already met standards of physical fitness through his or her law enforcement agency, LAWFIT, SWAT, or other quality testing - the ASCT requirement will not be required.  In those situations, the member will be asked to provide a certificate, score sheet, or letter from training staff of the physical testing.
